Decoding Astigmatism: A Simple Guide for Parents

Hearing your child has astigmatism can sound complicated, but we’re here to tell you: it’s one of the most common, easily diagnosed and treatable vision conditions out there. It’s not a disease, but simply a focusing issue. Understanding astigmatism is the first step to ensuring your child has comfortable, sharp vision for all of life’s activities.

What Exactly Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism happens when the surface of the eye or the lens inside the eye is more curved than it should be. Normally, the surface of the eye is smooth and evenly curved, allowing light to bend precisely. If your child has astigmatism, the surface is more curved leading to a mismatched shape. This uneven shape means that when light enters the eye, it is bent unevenly and the retina receives light in multiple focal points. This causes vision to be blurry for both distance and near objects. Unlike nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism distorts the clarity of vision across the entire visual field.

Signs That Your Child Might Have Astigmatism

Some children may not realise they have astigmatism, as they assume the way they see is normal. Here are a few signs parents can watch out for:

  • Blurry vision

  • Struggle to see details on objects

  • Eyestrain or fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Squinting to see clearly

  • Seeing a glare or halos around lights

What Causes Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is often inherited, but it also can develop over time due to several factors such as:

  • Eye injuries

  • Pressure on the cornea

  • Keratoconus

  • Issues that may develop after eye surgery

Treatment and Correction

The great news is that astigmatism is generally treatable, allowing your child to achieve clear vision. For most children, treatment involves eyeglasses or contact lenses.  Your eye care specialist will prescribe a lens that is specially shaped to counteract the uneven curve of the eye.

Early detection and consistent correction are key! Encourage your child to wear their glasses consistently, adopt healthy eye habits and make sure they have regular eye check-ups to keep their vision strong and clear.
