Ways to Slow Down Children's Myopia

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common in children, especially in today's digital world.

While the effects are not able to be reversed, there are several proactive steps parents can take to help slow down its progression and protect your child’s vision in the long run.

5 Ways to Slow Down Myopia

  1. Encourage More Outdoor Time

Children who spend at least 2 hours outdoors daily have a significantly lower risk of worsening myopia. Natural light and looking at distant objects help relax the eye muscles and reduce eye strain. Physical activities are so beneficial during their development stage.

  1. Reduce the Amount of Screen Time

Excessive use of screens such as phones, tablets, laptops can and will contribute to faster myopia progression. Try to use the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look 20 feet away to prevent over straining the eyes.

  1. Maintain Proper Reading Habits

Children should read or look at materials at a safe distance of about 30–40 cm in good lighting. Avoid reading while lying down or in moving vehicles, as this can strain the eyes. Remember to have your child sit upright while reading, also to maintain good reading habits!

  1. Go for Regular Eye Checks

Regular eye checks are important, even if your child does not show signs of myopia such as frequent squinting and eye rubbing. During the children’s growth stage, eyesight can defer from time to time, regular checks for early detection of myopia would help better control the progress of myopia.
